Wimbledon Officials to Defy Demand for Earlier Match Start Times, Concerned About Potential Impact on TV Contracts

Wimbledon Organizers to Resist Calls for Earlier Matches Despite Djokovic and Murray’s Request

Wimbledon is expected to reject Novak Djokovic’s request for earlier start times at next year’s Championships. The tournament organizers are concerned about potential financial backlash from their broadcast partners, as changing the schedule could trigger demands for rebates from television contracts. The scheduled start times are currently stipulated in key TV agreements, such as the one with the BBC, and altering them would require renegotiation.

Wimbledon implemented a 1:30pm start time on Centre Court two years ago as part of their Covid-19 protocols, while play on Number One Court begins at 1pm. This has been well-received by broadcasters, as it provides more prime-time matches. The All England Club recently signed a £60 million-per-year deal with the BBC until 2027 and a £400 million contract with ESPN for coverage in North America. Both broadcasters may demand rebates if the playing times are significantly changed.

BBC sources have indicated that they may accept a 1pm start time without compensation, but anything earlier would require substantial renegotiation. Djokovic and Andy Murray have advocated for earlier start times, citing the recent suspensions of their matches due to Merton Council’s 11pm curfew. However, Wimbledon is also hesitant to change the 11pm curfew to avoid upsetting local residents, who play a crucial role in the club’s plans for expansion.

Wimbledon CEO Sally Bolton defended the current schedule, noting that only two matches have been suspended so far, which is a significant improvement compared to previous years. The later start times are also favored by Wimbledon debenture holders and corporate clients, as it allows for a more leisurely lunch before the matches.
