William Lauder, cosmetics billionaire, purchases luxurious $25M New York City residence

Billionaire makeup tycoon, William Lauder, who serves as the executive director of the prestigious cosmetic company, Estée Lauder Companies, and is the grandson of its founders, recently acquired the luxurious Park Avenue residence of the late Claudia Cohen, a prominent gossip columnist for Page Six. Property records confirm that Lauder purchased the property for a sum of $24.95 million. Notably, Claudia Cohen was not just the observer, but occasionally the subject of gossip herself due to her high-profile marriage and subsequent divorce from billionaire businessman Ronald O. Perelman, who is named as the executor of her estate in the property records. This purchase follows Lauder’s acquisition of a lavish mansion worth $155 million in Palm Beach, Florida, in March. The mansion was previously owned by the late conservative radio personality Rush Limbaugh, who had purchased the 2.7-acre estate for approximately $3.9 million in 1998. The Upper East Side co-op, situated on Park Avenue at East 73rd Street, encompasses five bedrooms and belongs to the renowned architect Rosario Candela’s 778 Park Ave. This property was initially listed for $27.9 million in 2020.

Lauder had previously put his 14th-floor apartment, occupying the entire floor in the same building, up for sale for $45 million in 2019. However, the price was later reduced to $39 million in 2021, but the unit remained unsold. As per property records, Lauder had originally purchased this full-floor unit for $27.5 million back in 2007. Sources indicate that Lauder may be considering a move back to the building from his current residence at 998 Fifth Ave., where he acquired an apartment for $23.5 million in 2017. According to insiders, his plan is to combine his 12th and 14th floor apartments to create an extraordinary duplex. Interestingly, this building, like many others, does not have a 13th floor due to the superstitious beliefs of some New Yorkers. Despite attempts to reach out for comment, Lauder did not respond.

The expansive co-op spans over 5,500 square feet, encompassing the entire 12th floor. It boasts magnificent views of the city skyline along with a glimpse of Central Park through 34 windows and 100 feet of Park Avenue frontage. The design details of this residence include 11-foot-high ceilings, crown moldings, and hardwood floors, creating an elegant atmosphere. The co-op features a private elevator landing that opens into a gallery and a spacious living room with a woodburning fireplace, offering three oversized windows overlooking Park Avenue. Additionally, there is a formal dining room featuring another fireplace, as well as a wood-paneled library complete with custom built-ins and a third fireplace. The co-op also offers ample space to display artwork throughout. The bathrooms are elegantly designed and resemble art galleries themselves. Other notable features include eleven-foot ceilings, beautiful hardwood floors, and abundant natural light.

The co-op further comprises a large eat-in chef’s kitchen with a pantry, while a separate “staff wing” contains laundry facilities, a dining room, and two maid’s rooms along with a bathroom. The bedrooms are located in another wing of the co-op, with a particularly spacious primary bedroom suite in the corner position, featuring an ensuite bathroom and a dressing room. The building, which consists of 20 stories, was constructed in 1931 and comprises only 18 apartments. Douglas Elliman broker Steven Cohen, who is unrelated to Claudia Cohen, previously held the listing for the property but refrained from providing comments.
