EAGAN, Minn. — Kirk Cousins gave an intriguingly enigmatic response when asked about the increasing public speculation regarding the possibility of the Minnesota Vikings trading him before the upcoming NFL trade deadline on Oct. 31.
“You know, I am solely focused on defeating the Bears and achieving a 1-0 record this week,” Cousins stated with his trademark composure and determination on Wednesday. “Any other topic is unworthy of my valuable time, energy, and attention.”
When queried about the potential of waiving the no-trade clause in his contract, Cousins, in typical fashion, opted not to address the premise.
Cousins’ contract is set to expire next March, well after the deadline for franchise tag declarations, granting him the freedom to explore other opportunities in the free agent market if he desires.
Unfortunately for the Vikings, their recent performance has been lackluster, with four losses in their last five games. Additionally, they will be without their star receiver, Justin Jefferson (hamstring), for a minimum of four games after officially placing him on the injured reserve on Wednesday.
According to ESPN’s Football Power Index, the Vikings’ odds of securing a spot in the top 10 of the 2024 draft (41.5%) are twice as high as their chances of making the playoffs (20.3%). This has sparked discussions among fans and media alike about the team potentially unloading players before the trade deadline.
In order for a trade to materialize, Cousins would need to waive his no-trade clause. However, he made it abundantly clear on Wednesday that he did not wish to fuel further speculation in the public sphere.
In fact, Cousins vehemently denied any awareness of the ongoing public discourse surrounding his potential trade.
“Ignorance is bliss,” declared Cousins. “And I intentionally choose to remain uninformed. I don’t have access to a multitude of external sources, and I prefer it that way. It’s a deliberate decision.”
“Aside from the occasional text from my high school friends informing me about what they’ve read, I genuinely don’t have a clue about what’s happening. At times, I purposely isolate myself to the point where I might come across as oblivious or naive. But I’d rather err on the side of focusing on what truly matters and aids my performance.”
