Why Tom Cruise Owns Multiple Planes and the Fascinating Story Behind

Did you know that the military propeller plane Tom Cruise flew in the upcoming movie “Top Gun: Maverick” is a P-51 Mustang? What’s even more impressive is that this plane was built way back in 1946 and purchased by Cruise himself in 2001. Paramount recently released a featurette showcasing the plane, and in it, flight instructor and “Top Gun: Maverick” technical advisor Steve Hinton expressed his admiration for the P-51. He said, “When you’re flying a P-51, you can still feel that pioneering spirit of aviation. I know Tom loves doing aerobatics, and this plane is perfect for it.” The video also gives us a glimpse of Cruise taking his co-star Jennifer Connelly for a ride in the plane, which she described as an “incredible experience” and praised Cruise as an amazing pilot.

But that’s not all. Cruise also treated James Corden, the host of “The Late Late Show,” to a thrilling ride in the P-51. However, Corden seemed quite unsettled and nervous throughout the flight, especially when Cruise jokingly mentioned their emergency plan – inverting the plane and ejecting Corden with a parachute. Corden’s response? “I don’t want to be plopped out.” Despite this apprehension, Cruise took Corden on an unforgettable adventure, even engaging in a mock dogfight with another P-51 pilot.
