Why Suspending Aid to the Palestinian People is the Ineffective Choice – Letters that Engage

Israel’s response to the surprise attack by Hamas, which some have referred to as a “complete siege,” will only serve to make peace in the short to medium term highly unlikely. This will additionally exacerbate the already dire situation faced by many Palestinians, although it is necessary to acknowledge Israel’s right to self-defense. The decision by the EU to suspend all aid to the Palestinian people, with an EU Commissioner attempting to act unilaterally, will only serve to prolong suffering and hardship. In order to resist this course of action, Ireland should utilize its diplomatic power.

Hamas, once again, has demonstrated its despicable nature by carrying out a massacre against innocent young Israelis who were attending a music festival centered around “friends, love, and peace.” The organization executed individuals who were hiding in cars and scrub, invaded homes, and wiped out entire families. As they returned to Gaza, they were treated like heroes, but in reality, they have gained nothing. To paraphrase Japanese Admiral Yamamoto, they have only awoken a sleeping giant with a terrible resolve. The leaders of Hamas must have known that this atrocity would only galvanize Israel for vengeance.

However, it is important to note that Hamas’s focus is on rockets, not on necessary infrastructure such as hospitals, schools, and power plants. The organization thrives in a state of perpetual war. It came to power through a violent coup in 2007, two years after Israel withdrew from Gaza. While some compare the situation in Gaza to that of an outdoor prison, it must be acknowledged that it shares a border with Egypt, an Arab country that has fought several wars in support of the Palestinian cause. Gaza also has economic potential with solar energy, an offshore gas field, and a Mediterranean coastline. But without lasting peace, specifically in the form of a “two-state solution,” these opportunities are irrelevant. By carrying out brutal acts against women, children, and festival goers, Hamas has alienated young, liberal Israelis who are the most likely to be supportive of a just and lasting peace.

In times like these, the leaders of Israel would do well to remember the wise words spoken by Justice Robert Jackson during the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg in 1945. Nations that have been injured must refrain from seeking vengeance and instead submit their captive enemies to justice.

Sinn Féin claims that it would solve the housing crisis if it were in government. However, considering that we currently have full employment, it remains unclear where they would find the necessary workers to construct these houses.

The recent passing of Chuck Feeney, who donated his entire fortune instead of accumulating wealth, is a sad moment for Ireland. Feeney was a true friend of Ireland, and his actions were truly remarkable and inspirational. It is worth noting that his support played a significant role in securing the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. Despite his immense generosity, his name does not appear on any of the 1,000 buildings he funded across five continents with $2.7 billion.

While it is true that Benjamin Netanyahu and his right-wing government must share some responsibility for the current situation by isolating two million people in an open-air prison without basic necessities, it is important to state that there is no justification for the horrific acts committed by Hamas.

The Irish rugby team participating in the World Cup has shown remarkable progress and determination. Unlike past Irish teams who faltered at the quarter-final stages, this team has displayed no signs of wavering. They have prepared meticulously to face any challenge thrown their way. Despite the formidable reputation of the All Blacks, Ireland remains undaunted. With both the necessary skills and mental toughness, they are poised to triumph over any obstacle. This Irish team is the best to ever wear the green jersey and their upcoming clash with the All Blacks promises to be a battle of titans. Allez les Verts!
