In an interview with Brut, Cook stated, “Having an iPhone every year for those people who want it is a great thing. We offer trade-in options for old phones, allowing us to resell functional devices and recycle materials from non-functional ones to create new iPhones.”

When questioned about the future of the iPhone, Cook hinted at a carbon-neutral device in 20 to 30 years. While he acknowledged that significant advancements would occur, he remained tight-lipped about specific details.

Cook emphasized the need for Apple to set an example when it comes to environmental sustainability. He expressed his desire for the company to be a role model, encouraging others to adopt similar practices. Standing in a field of solar panels at one of Apple’s data centers, Cook highlighted initiatives like the use of recyclable materials and the commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.

Despite these efforts, Apple has faced accusations of greenwashing, where companies deceive customers by falsely presenting themselves as environmentally friendly. However, Cook vehemently denied these allegations, asserting that Apple welcomes scrutiny based on concrete evidence rather than mere public relations.

To demonstrate their commitment, Apple now incorporates 30% recycled materials in their latest Apple Watch Series 9, their first carbon-neutral product. Additionally, the company has made strides in reducing packaging and plastic usage and has transitioned to more sustainable transportation methods.

Cook concluded by sharing his personal efforts to reduce environmental impact, such as driving an electric car, minimizing plastic consumption, recycling, and composting.
