Why My Group of 3 Won’t Return to Disney World’s Teppan Edo Restaurant: Our $171 Experience

My family decided to try lunch at Teppan Edo in Epcot and despite the difficulty in securing a reservation, we managed to snag one for a late lunch. However, we were somewhat disappointed with the lack of ambiance and the additional costs that surprised us. Our party of three felt rushed throughout the meal and the food did not impress us enough to warrant a return visit. Teppan Edo is situated in the Japan Pavilion at Epcot, a location I had never dined at before. Curiosity and recommendations from others prompted me to give it a try during our latest trip to Disney World. We usually avoid Japanese restaurants since we have plenty where we live, but for this specific Disney trip, we decided to explore new experiences. As a result, I made a reservation for a late lunch at Teppan Edo. The entrance of the restaurant provided a breathtaking view of the Japan Pavilion, which we admired upon arrival. However, beyond that, the overall decor and atmosphere of the restaurant left much to be desired. For a Disney restaurant, the lack of ornamentation seemed odd. While we didn’t expect an overwhelming display of Mickey and Minnie decorations, some additional touches would have made the restaurant more inviting. Unfortunately, it was just a plain room with white walls, four hibachi tables, and a limited color palette of black, white, and red. Our server was attentive and promptly took our orders for cocktails and appetizers. We were presented with warm towelettes, known as oshibori, to cleanse our hands, a customary practice in Japanese dining. The specialty drinks, including the yuzu lemonade with strawberry popping boba, were a hit, with my daughters even ordering a second round. I decided to try the Tokyo Sunset cocktail, highly recommended by my tablemates, and found it to be one of the best cocktails I’ve had at Disney World. Moving on to our meal, we began with a safe choice of a California roll. While it was tasty, I felt that the price of $14 for eight pieces was a bit steep. Additionally, we had to pay extra for miso soup, something I found surprising as it is typically included in hibachi restaurants. Our complimentary salads arrived shortly after, but the experience started feeling rushed. Our hibachi chef joined us as we enjoyed our appetizers, performing impressive culinary tricks, such as creating a butter Mickey Mouse head with a spoon. However, the overall experience felt hurried. We were seated at 3:30 p.m. and paid our bill by 4:29 p.m., an unusually short time for a hibachi meal. The portion sizes appeared smaller compared to other hibachi places I have visited, and the absence of fried rice as an option, even for an additional cost, was disappointing. The flavor of the food was underwhelming, relying mostly on soy sauce and minimal seasoning. We found ourselves needing the ginger and yum-yum dipping sauces to enhance the taste. While my steak and shrimp were well-prepared, my daughter found her chicken to be a bit dry and didn’t eat much of it. Both girls also commented on the excessive saltiness of the yum-yum sauce. Considering the rushed experience, smaller portions, and lackluster flavors, our entire family agreed that we won’t be returning to Teppan Edo. Despite our fondness for hibachi dining, this particular restaurant did not meet our expectations. Our bill totaled $171 before the tip, further adding to our disappointment. All in all, Teppan Edo fell short for my family, and we will be seeking other hibachi options in the future.
