Why Musk Urges Publishers to Embrace Long-Form Content on X Platform instead of Link Shares

Elon Musk, the innovative entrepreneur, shared a valuable insight on content publishing, particularly on X, the platform previously known as Twitter. In a recent post, Musk emphasized the importance of posting content in long-form rather than sharing links, as the algorithm prioritizes optimizing the time users spend on the platform.

Journalists and news media professionals have been avid users of X to promote their stories. This shift in approach amid Musk’s comments signifies a significant change for the site.

Musk’s exact words on X were, “Our algorithm tries to optimize time spent on X, so links don’t get as much attention because there is less time spent if people click away. Best thing is to post content in long form on this platform.”

This statement aligns with Musk’s recent posts where he expressed a shift from consuming “legacy news” as he appreciates the value of citizen journalism. Furthermore, he encourages people worldwide to share news about ongoing events as they unfold in real-time.

“Why read a 1000-word article about something when it was already posted on 𝕏 several days ago?” Musk’s post on X quipped, highlighting the rapid dissemination of news on the platform.

However, the prominent entrepreneur has also faced criticisms regarding content moderation changes that some argue led to an increase in misinformation on X.

According to a report by the Climate Action Against Disinformation (CAAD) coalition, X ranked poorly among social media platforms in addressing climate change misinformation. The report criticized X for lacking clear policies, transparency mechanisms, and effective policy enforcement against climate misinformation.

The report specifically mentioned that while X announced a policy against climate denial ads in 2022, there is no public data to confirm the enforcement of this policy.

Musk has also engaged in disputes with CNN over a fake headline he posted in the past. The billionaire shared a screenshot of a fictitious chyron on CNN claiming that “Elon Musk could threaten free speech on Twitter by literally allowing people to speak freely.”

In response, CNN’s public relations department addressed Musk on X, clarifying that the headline was never published. Musk simply replied with “Lmaoooo.”
