Why Meg Ryan believes rom-com ‘What Happens Later’ is more than just a comeback – It’s a heartfelt tribute to Nora Ephron

Meg Ryan makes her highly anticipated return to the silver screen after an eight-year break. However, Ryan dismisses the notion that she ever left in the first place.

“I’ve always been here,” Ryan tells Yahoo Entertainment in response to the narrative surrounding her Hollywood comeback.

Ryan, once hailed as the queen of romantic comedies, is venturing back into the genre with her new film What Happens Later. The 61-year-old actress co-wrote and directed the movie, which also stars David Duchovny.

“Meg is a true artist,” Duchovny praises. “She excels as both an actress and director, constantly evolving and creating. She has never lost herself!”

However, Ryan jokingly states: “I’m not here to stay!”

What Happens Later follows exes Bill (Duchovny) and Willa (Ryan) as they unexpectedly run into each other at an airport and end up getting stranded overnight due to a snowstorm. The film’s synopsis reveals that they delve into their past and discover that their attraction and annoyance towards each other is as strong as it was decades ago.

“The idea for this film came to me during the pandemic when I had the time to write about it,” Ryan explains. However, she clarifies that returning to the genre that made her a household name was not a deliberate decision.

“You didn’t plan it?” Duchovny asks.

“No, it just happened,” Ryan replies with a smile.

While Ryan is renowned for her work in romantic comedies, the genre is relatively new territory for Duchovny. He admits to being drawn to What Happens Later because of the opportunity to work with Ryan. He also finds it intriguing that they are the only two actors present in the entire 103-minute movie.

“It’s challenging to keep the audience engaged when there are only two characters throughout the entire film. Moreover, because they keep referencing the past, it was like walking a tightrope,” Ryan reveals. “It could have easily gone awry.”

What Happens Later is dedicated to Nora Ephron, Ryan’s frequent collaborator in the romantic comedy genre. The pair worked together on films such as Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail before Ephron’s passing in 2012.

“This film is a heartfelt tribute,” Ryan explains. “I keenly observed Nora during our collaborations, and I feel privileged to have been part of so many of her movies and to have gained her trust. She had a deep love for this genre, and this movie is my way of expressing gratitude.”
