Last year, I had the urge to leave my hometown of Los Angeles and took a short trip to the East Coast. However, as soon as I boarded my return flight, I realized how much I longed to be back home.
While I enjoy exploring new cities, I cannot imagine finding another city that captures my heart as Los Angeles does. I have spent nearly 23 years of my life here, and there are four reasons why I consider it an irreplaceable home.
Los Angeles offers immense diversity in both space and people
Even though Los Angeles might sometimes feel like a small town due to chance encounters with past teachers or professors, the city itself is enormous. It spans over 469 square miles, surpassing other major cities in the United States.
Furthermore, Los Angeles is renowned for its diversity. People from 140 countries, speaking 224 different languages, call this city their home. Each neighborhood in LA possesses a unique atmosphere and distinctive characteristics, making them feel like individual communities within a larger whole.
For instance, the Fairfax district, which now attracts sneaker enthusiasts and boasts Instagram-famous eateries, was historically a Jewish enclave formed by Eastern European immigrants after World War II. Despite changing times, remnants of the neighborhood’s delis remain, with Canter’s Deli being a prominent example.
Similar stories can be found in other neighborhoods, where signs in languages such as Spanish, Mandarin, and Arabic proudly reflect the cultural heritage of the people who shaped Los Angeles into what it is today.
The culinary scene in Los Angeles is filled with stories
Living in such a diverse city means enjoying a wide variety of cuisines brought by people from different backgrounds. Despite the stereotype of LA being a green-juice paradise, my experience reveals a rich and diverse food culture. I have tasted Oaxacan mole, sea urchin, doro wat, and countless other dishes thanks to the culinary contributions of immigrant communities.
Exploring the city’s many neighborhoods allows me to embark on a gastronomic journey and hear the stories behind each dish. Food serves as a powerful medium for connection and plays a crucial role in making Los Angeles a beautiful city.
Los Angeles boasts an unparalleled climate

Los Angeles is often celebrated for its abundance of sunny days. With nearly 300 days of sunshine per year, it ranks as the 8th sunniest city in the US, according to RedFin.
However, what sets Los Angeles apart is the diversity of its climate. While we enjoy the sunshine of Florida without the humidity, we also have the option to drive just a short distance and experience the cool breezes of beach cities like Venice and the Pacific Palisades, or venture into the mountains to towns like Big Bear and Lake Arrowhead, which offer snowy landscapes.
I never take the sunshine for granted, but it’s great to have the opportunity to enjoy some snowfall nearby.
