Why I Have No Intention of Repeating my London-Berlin Train Journey

I embarked on an adventurous journey from London to Berlin and back, opting for a combination of the Eurostar and the European Sleeper train. The entire trip took me almost 24 hours, including a layover in Brussels. Upon arriving in Berlin, I was exhausted and desperately in need of a caffeine boost.

Traveling sustainably is becoming increasingly popular, with many people choosing long-distance trains, coaches, and car-sharing apps over flights. In fact, France and Austria have even banned certain short-haul flights. As someone who has always relied on public transport, I have taken trains, trams, and buses throughout my life.

However, this was my first experience on a sleeper train, and it was quite different from any other train journey I had taken before. I had only ever traveled for about five to six hours at most, so the prospect of spending a night on a train was both exciting and nerve-wracking.

I began the journey at London’s St. Pancras Station, taking the Eurostar to Brussels. Unfortunately, due to a security incident, the journey took much longer than anticipated. Eventually, I arrived in Brussels, where I had planned a six-hour layover to explore the city.

After my short visit to Brussels, I boarded the European Sleeper towards Berlin. Opting for the lowest-price ticket, I found myself in a six-person compartment without a bed. The interior of the train was a bit outdated, and there were no charging ports, but I appreciated the spaciousness.

As the journey progressed, more passengers joined our compartment, and the lack of food options on board became apparent. Fortunately, I had brought my own snacks. Once it was time for bed, I found it incredibly difficult to get comfortable in the rigid seats. The constant stops and noise from adjacent compartments made it nearly impossible to get a good night’s sleep.

To my surprise, I discovered that one passenger resorted to sleeping in the corridor due to the lack of space. When we finally arrived in Berlin, I realized that I had slept for only a few hours during the entire journey.

Despite the lack of sleep, I continued with my plans to explore Berlin. The return journey was equally sleep-deprived, as various issues led to seat downgrades and further discomfort. However, I had a longer layover in Brussels, allowing me to explore the city at a leisurely pace.

Overall, I appreciated the convenience and sustainability of traveling by train. It allowed me to avoid baggage fees, bring unlimited liquids, and explore interesting layover destinations. However, it is important to note that train travel takes more time compared to flying.
