Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) emphasized the importance of showing unwavering support for Israel in its battle against Palestinian militant group Hamas. Cruz stated that it is critical for every American to reinforce America’s “100 percent support” for Israel. Speaking in an interview with Fox News anchor Sean Hannity, he urged Americans to stand together and declare, “America stands with Israel 100 percent period, full stop for as long as it takes to utterly and completely defeat Hamas.”
Cruz went on to advocate for cutting off funding to Gaza, which has been under the control of Hamas since 2007, as well as Iran. Instead, he suggested that the Biden administration should direct funding towards Israel’s defensive weaponry, including the Iron Dome, which intercepts rockets targeted at Israel. He stressed the need to counter the potential demonization of Israel by Democrats and the media, and emphasized that Hamas uses human shields while Israel has the right to defend itself.
The conflict between Israel and Gaza has intensified since Hamas launched a series of attacks on Israel last week, resulting in the deaths of over 1,300 people, including numerous civilians. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) allege that Hamas has taken 199 individuals hostage. In response, Israeli forces have conducted a bombardment of Gaza, resulting in over 3,400 Palestinian casualties and more than 12,000 injuries, according to the Gaza Health Ministry’s report. Israel has also imposed restrictions on food, water, and medicine access in Gaza, and ordered the evacuation of over 1.1 million Palestinians to the southern part of the territory in anticipation of a possible ground assault.
Despite the challenges faced by Palestinians in Gaza, Hamas has discouraged residents from leaving their homes. President Biden expressed unwavering support for Israel in the wake of Hamas’s surprise attack and visited Tel Aviv to meet with Israeli leaders and affected families. The White House is reportedly preparing a funding request that includes aid for Israel, Ukraine, and border security.
Biden also announced an agreement to allow humanitarian aid to enter Gaza from Egypt and pledged $100 million in U.S. funding for assistance to civilians in Gaza and the West Bank.
