Why Drivers Should Reconsider Buying an Electric Car Today: Insights from a Mechanic

Renowned mechanic Scotty Kilmer advises against purchasing electric cars due to the “unproven” nature of the technology. According to the popular YouTube personality, electric vehicles are not suitable for long-distance travel, unlike traditional petrol and diesel cars. Additionally, high upfront costs deter many drivers from embracing this technology.

Kilmer suggests that motorists should consider switching to an EV only in the future when the infrastructure is more developed. In his YouTube video (click here), he remarks, “Electric cars are stacking up at dealerships, and people are not interested in buying these foolish vehicles.”

He continues, “They are overpriced and unproven. American drivers cover significant distances, or at least they believe so. Hence, they prefer large vehicles like trucks and SUVs. Electrifying such vehicles becomes exorbitantly expensive due to their size and weight. Until these challenges are overcome, it is wiser to wait and buy an electric car in the future.”

Recent data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reveals a surge in electric car sales this year. In the UK alone, over 190,000 new EVs have been sold, marking a 40.5 percent increase compared to 2022 figures. Plug-in hybrid sales have also risen, with a 30 percent growth in registrations. This trend is mirrored in the United States, where Q2 2022 witnessed nearly 300,000 EV sales, a remarkable 48 percent boost. Tesla remains the leading player in the electric vehicle market.

According to a survey conducted by Regit, 79 percent of drivers express concerns about the limited availability of electric car charging stations, while 70 percent are deterred by the high costs. Furthermore, 58 percent of respondents claim they would never consider owning an EV.

In agreement, Kilmer states, “Electric cars are stacking up at dealerships, and people are simply not buying them. Personally, during my visits and research, I have already observed these vehicles accumulating at dealerships. If people do not purchase them, the future of electric cars is uncertain.

“Prospective buyers ponder, ‘Is this technology perfected yet? Will there be sufficient charging infrastructure? How inconvenient is it to deal with range anxiety?’ The fact is, manufacturers can produce electric cars, but will there be consumer demand? It appears that people are not interested.”
