Why Do Mosquito Bites Rarely Cause Immediate Sensation? Expert Doctor Reveals

A doctor has provided an explanation as to why you may not feel a mosquito bite when it happens.

In a TikTok video posted in June, Dr. Sermed Mezher, based in London, revealed that the method of mosquito biting is so advanced that it is usually imperceptible.

According to Dr. Mezher, only female mosquitoes bite because they require additional nourishment to support their offspring.

The reason for the lack of sensation, or perhaps a mild sting, is due to the anesthetic-like qualities present in female mosquitoes’ saliva.

Dr. Mezher explained that the insects start by injecting a local anesthetic into the skin, rendering the six needles that penetrate the skin undetectable.

Only female mosquitos bite you, he explained, because ‘they need extra nourishment to be able to provide for their young’

According to Dr. Mezher, “The two outer ones you see here are saws for cutting through the skin, and the others are for detection and absorption of blood from the blood vessels.”

It can take several hours or even days for a person to feel the effects of a mosquito bite. By the time you are aware of the bite, the mosquito has already finished its feeding process.

In the video’s caption, Dr. Mezher added that mosquitoes have evolved an extraordinary ability to locate blood vessels and extract blood without causing significant harm or discomfort.

He further explained, “Their feeding technique involves a combination of chemical cues, sensory perception, and a complex proboscis structure, all working together to facilitate their meal.”

Research indicates that female mosquitoes are drawn to plumes rich in carbon dioxide, the gas we exhale. They identify potential hosts based on the amount of carbon dioxide and the type and quantity of sweat produced.

Heat also plays a role, with objects at body temperature attracting more mosquitoes than those at room temperature.
