In a recent interview with PBS NewsHour’s Geoff Bennett, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (D) expressed her confusion and disbelief towards Americans who support Russian President Vladimir Putin’s actions in the war against Ukraine.
Clinton stated, “I don’t understand any American siding with Putin, but we’ve seen it and we’ve heard it and we have to fight against it.”
Bennett asked Clinton about the growing division in American politics over funding and support for Ukraine against Russia, as well as how Putin perceives it. In response, Clinton mentioned that she believes Putin is “thrilled” about this divide.
“I think he is fomenting it as well,” Clinton explained. “Putin and his team, through both covert and overt interventions, aim to undermine democracy and influence political leaders. This is a significant part of how he views his role.”
Clinton’s comments are particularly relevant in the context of the recent tensions in Congress over funding for Ukraine, with a possible government shutdown looming. Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) raised concerns about renewed funding for Ukraine, questioning the accountability and the plan for victory.
McCarthy stated, “Where’s the accountability on the money we already spent? What is the plan for victory?”
He went on to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as an atrocity and expressed the need for accountability for taxpayer expenditures.
