July 27 (UPI) — The Los Angeles Angels have strengthened their starting rotation with the acquisition of Lucas Giolito from the Chicago White Sox in a trade between the two teams.

The trade between the Angels and White Sox was announced on Wednesday night. The Angels will be sending minor-league catcher Edgar Quero and pitcher Ky Busch to the White Sox in exchange for Giolito and right-handed pitcher Reynaldo Lopez.

“These aren’t just moves on the back of a baseball card,” said White Sox general manager Rick Hahn in a statement to reporters. “You have relationships with these players.

“Lucas and Rey, in particular, are two players we brought in with the goal of winning together. Unfortunately, we haven’t experienced as much success as we had hoped. That’s disappointing.”

Giolito, aged 29, has a record of 6-6 with a 3.79 ERA in 21 appearances this season. As a 2019 All-Star, he has a career record of 59-53 with a 4.26 ERA over eight seasons in the major leagues.

He was originally the No. 16 overall pick by the Washington Nationals in the 2012 MLB Draft before being traded to the White Sox in 2016. Giolito is set to become a free agent in the upcoming off-season.

Lopez, aged 29, has a record of 2-5 with a 4.29 ERA in 43 appearances this season. He made his MLB debut in 2016 with the Nationals and has a career record of 38-47 with a 4.42 ERA over 216 appearances.

Lopez is also set to become a free agent in 2024.

Quero, aged 20, is currently ranked as the No. 65 prospect in baseball according to MLB Pipeline. He was the second-ranked prospect in the Angels organization. Quero has achieved a batting average of .246 with three home runs and 35 RBIs in 70 games this season for the Class-AA Rocket City Trash Pandas.

Busch, aged 23, was the Angels’ third-ranked prospect. The left-handed pitcher recorded a record of 1-3 with a 5.88 ERA in six starts this season for the Trash Pandas. He also went 0-1 with a 15.75 ERA in two starts for the Arizona Complex League Angels, the franchise’s Rookie-level affiliate.

The Angels currently have the fourth-worst ERA (4.44) in the American League, with their relievers owning the 11th-worst ERA in baseball at 4.18.

The Angels, with a current record of 52-49, occupy third place in the American League West, trailing the first-place Texas Rangers (60-43) by seven games and leading the fourth-place Seattle Mariners (52-50) by half a game. The Houston Astros (58-45) are in second place, while the Oakland Athletics (28-76) are in last place.

The Angels will have a doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers on Thursday in Detroit, with the first game scheduled to start at 1:10 p.m. EDT at Comerica Park.
