White House Welcomes Five Southland NCAA Championship-Winning Teams

The White House honored several NCAA champions on College Athlete Day, including the UCLA women’s soccer and men’s volleyball teams, as well as the USC beach volleyball team. Also recognized were the Azusa Pacific women’s track and field team, who won their second Division II outdoor championship, and the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s tennis team, who secured their second consecutive Division III championship. This ceremony, held at the South Lawn of the White House, was hosted by Vice President Kamala Harris in place of President Joe Biden, who had to undergo a root canal at the White House.

Vice President Harris praised the athletes, recognizing their hard work, sacrifices, and dedication to becoming national champions. She acknowledged that their journey was not an easy one, as they trained through injuries, missed celebrations, and even persevered during a pandemic. Harris commended their commitment and grit.

UCLA achieved a remarkable victory in the NCAA women’s soccer championship, coming back from a two-goal deficit in the final minutes to defeat North Carolina in overtime. This comeback marked the biggest in College Cup history. Meanwhile, the UCLA men’s volleyball team secured their 20th NCAA championship title by defeating Hawaii. USC’s beach volleyball team also celebrated their third consecutive championship win by defeating UCLA.

In addition to these teams, the White House previously honored the NCAA Division I basketball champions, the University of Connecticut men’s team, and the Louisiana State University women’s team.
