White House Urges Safe Gaza Evacuation to Protect Innocent Civilians

The White House emphasizes its concern for civilian safety as Israel urges one million people in Gaza to evacuate to the south, raising fears of a humanitarian crisis. The Israeli order suggests a potential ground assault on Gaza in response to Hamas attacks that claimed over 1,000 lives, including many civilians. Israel has already launched an intense air assault on Gaza. Hamas, recognized as a terrorist organization by the U.S. government, holds control in Gaza.

John Kirby, White House national security spokesman, stated in an interview with CNN, “We believe that there should be zero civilian casualties.” The White House has advocated for the safe passage of civilians out of Gaza, acknowledging that adequate time and transportation are necessary for those who wish to leave. However, this call from Israel poses a dilemma for Gazan civilians, as many lack homes or transportation in the south.

“Obviously, the more time people have, the better,” Kirby emphasized. “Our goal is to protect civilians and ensure their safe movement within Gaza.”

The United Nations cautioned against attempting to evacuate such a large number of people within a 24-hour period, foreseeing disastrous consequences. Kirby expressed the White House’s reluctance to engage in armchair quarterbacking but acknowledged the complexity of the situation. He said, “We understand their objective is to move civilians away from harm and provide them with fair warning. However, evacuating a million people in an urban and densely populated environment is a formidable task. Gaza is already a combat zone.”

Earlier in the day, Jeremy Konyndyk, president of Refugees International, urged President Biden to engage with the Israelis in protecting civilians. The Israeli order caused panic among civilians and aid workers in Gaza.
