Which? Ranks Valencia as Europe’s Top Coastal Destination: The Best and Worst European Coastal Destinations

The rankings for the European coastal destinations that Britons love the most and the least in 2023 have been revealed by Which?. According to the consumer champion’s survey, Valencia in Spain comes out on top, while Mykonos in Greece is ranked bottom. More than 3,500 members were asked to rate their experiences of 44 coastal towns and cities across Europe based on criteria such as beaches, seafront or marina, food and drink, accommodation, tourist attractions, attractiveness, shopping, entertainment, peace and quiet, safety, friendliness, and value for money.

Valencia, a Spanish port city, earns the highest score of 91 percent. Visitors praised its beaches, giving them a full five-star rating, and it was the only Spanish destination in the survey to score full marks for value for money. Valencia also receives five stars for the quality of its tourist attractions, shopping, friendliness, and attractiveness, and at least four stars in all other categories. Comparatively lower tourist numbers make Valencia a less crowded alternative to Barcelona, contributing to its five-star rating for peace and quiet. The city also offers a renowned gastronomic scene and a mix of historic and futuristic architecture.

Tied in second place with a score of 88 percent each are Venice and Porto. While Venice received criticism for its prices and crowds, it captivated visitors with its magical views and unique architecture. It earns five stars for attractiveness and tourist attractions, including famous landmarks such as St Mark’s Square and Doge’s Palace. Porto, Portugal’s second city, is described as picturesque and earns five stars for its marina, friendliness, and value for money. Visitors feel the town punches above its weight and appreciate its laid-back energy and excellent selection of restaurants and bars.

Tavira in Portugal’s Algarve region takes the third spot with a score of 87 percent. This historic town offers quaint seafood restaurants, independent boutiques, and pretty cobbled streets. Visitors rated it five stars for its marina, value for money, friendliness, peace and quiet, and safety. It receives four stars for attractiveness, quality tourist attractions, and food and drink.

On the Costa del Sol, Nerja and Estepona are among the high-scoring destinations. Nerja is described as a low-rise town with white-washed buildings perched on the cliffside, while Estepona is praised for its unspoilt old town and palm-fringed promenade. Mykonos, on the other hand, receives an overall score of 58 percent, with lower ratings for its seafront and marina and friendliness. Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol ranks second to last with a score of 66 percent, while Portimao on the Algarve takes the third-to-last spot with a score of 68 percent.

Rory Boland, editor of Which? Travel, suggests looking beyond the biggest name destinations when planning a getaway. The survey shows that Costa Del Sol has more to offer beyond its well-known resorts, with top-rated spots like Nerja and Estepona offering a laid-back atmosphere. Boland also mentions that switching a city break in Barcelona or Lisbon for Valencia or Porto could be a worthwhile alternative, considering their high ratings by visitors.

The survey was conducted between March and April 2023, and destination scores were calculated based on overall satisfaction and the likelihood of recommending the town as a holiday destination.
