What You Need to Know About the Maui Fire While Traveling to Hawaii

Hawaii Declares State of Emergency as Wildfires Ravage Maui

Hawaii, a popular tourist destination, is currently facing a state of emergency due to deadly wildfires that are causing destruction on Maui and other islands. As a result, officials are strongly discouraging non-essential travel to Maui.

To assist in evacuation efforts, major airlines are providing support to evacuate residents and visitors in danger zones. For those who had planned trips to Maui, airlines and accommodation providers are offering flexibility to rebook.

Areas Affected by the Fires

According to Hawaii News Now, there are currently several out-of-control wildfires on Maui and Hawaii Island. The affected areas on Maui include Lahaina, Kihei, and Upcountry Maui. The northwest part of the Island of Hawaii, between Hapuna and Kawaihae, is also experiencing fires.

Travel Advisory for Maui

The Hawaii Tourism Agency strongly discourages non-essential travel to Maui, and even tourists already on the island are encouraged to leave immediately. Travel to other islands in Hawaii remains unaffected, and the government assures that it is safe to visit them.

Flight Information

Many airlines are offering travel waivers to customers with immediate plans to travel to Maui. These waivers allow passengers to rebook their flights without fees or cancel them for credit or a full refund. Airlines have adjusted their flight schedules to support visitors affected by the wildfires.

United Airlines has cancelled commercial flights to Kahului Airport on Maui and is using empty passenger planes to transport Maui residents off the island. American Airlines plans to operate all scheduled flights to and from Maui and offers flexibility for rebooking or refunds. Alaska Air has implemented a flexible travel policy that allows customers to change or cancel their flights without fees.

Southwest Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines are adding extra flights between islands and to the mainland U.S. to facilitate urgent travel. Fares from Maui to the mainland U.S. are available for under $100.

Accommodations and Refunds

Many hotels and resorts in vulnerable areas have ceased operations and are not accepting guests. The Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa is closed through August 13 and will issue refunds for affected reservations. Airbnb has activated its extenuating circumstances policy for parts of Hawaii, including Maui, allowing hosts and guests to cancel stays without penalty and receive full refunds.

Travel Insurance and Protections

If you have purchased travel insurance, it may help recoup funds for non-refundable reservations or provide medical evacuation options for those already on Maui. Some credit card companies also offer travel protections, so it’s worth checking what benefits your card provides.
