What caused the Canadian wildfires? Investigating the root of the fires blanketing the East Coast in smoke.

Over the last six weeks, Canada has been plagued by hundreds of out-of-control wildfires, resulting in mass evacuations and the destruction of millions of acres. While the wildfire season in Canada typically spans from May through October, the scale of devastation in the early stages of the season is unprecedented. Experts have attributed this crisis to climate change-induced extreme temperatures and drought that have transformed the country into a tinderbox. The unprecedented fires have also led to diminished air quality in the United States, especially along the East Coast.

According to Edward Struzik, a fellow at Queen’s Institute for Energy and Environmental Policy at Queen’s University in Canada and author of “Dark Days at Noon, The Future of Fire,” climate change has extended the fire season, since spring arrives weeks earlier and fall later. Struzik has also suggested that the weakening of the jet stream, a weather creator that moves from west to east, exacerbates the problem. Meanwhile, the destruction from these fires up to this point in the season has been 13 times worse than the 10-year average, according to the Canadian Wildland Fire Information System.

The recent wildfires have raised the alarm bells on climate change, with experts saying that warmer temperatures and severe droughts have accelerated the burning process, making it tougher to control. With the Canadian government rating the country’s preparedness at its highest level, international liaison officers from several countries including Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa are coming to Canada’s aid in battling the wildfires. Even President Biden weighed in acknowledging the role of climate change in the crisis and the United States’ commitment to assist. The Canadian government also predicts that the situation is bound to worsen, given the projected warm temperatures and ongoing droughts.
