What Can I Say? Confessions of a Deadhead

A photograph that was taken at a Dead & Company concert in Virginia has caused a lot of buzz on social media. The blurry image, which has been viewed 2.8 million times, depicts a gray-haired man in a collared shirt and baseball cap among the crowd of fans enjoying the performance of the Grateful Dead spinoff band in Bristow. What’s interesting is that this man is none other than Jerome Powell, the Federal Reserve Chair, as confirmed by Powell himself during a House Committee hearing. This revelation came after journalist Jake Sherman shared the photo on Twitter. It seems that Powell’s musical taste has sparked curiosity among the public.

During the hearing about efforts to tackle inflation, Democratic Rep. Wiley Nickel took the opportunity to inquire about Powell’s musical interests. Being a Deadhead himself, Nickel expressed excitement upon learning that Powell had attended the recent concert. Nickel asked Powell if he enjoyed the show, to which Powell responded, “It was terrific. What can I say? It was great.” Powell revealed that he has been a Grateful Dead fan for 50 years, prompting Nickel to compliment his taste in music as Powell raised both fists in the air.

Not only does Powell like to listen to the band, but he also reportedly plays their music on the guitar. According to Barron’s, Powell attended his first Grateful Dead concert in Washington, DC, in 1973. Forbes reported that Powell’s sister Monica played a role in the formation of Dead & Company, as she introduced the band’s bass player, Oteil Burbridge, to the Grateful Dead’s music. Dead & Company is currently on its final tour, while a Grateful Dead biopic is in the works.
