Westminster unveils Dress worn by Penny Mordaunt in standout Coronation performance

Visitors now have the opportunity to witness Penny Mordaunt’s remarkable teal dress from King Charles’ III Coronation in person for a limited time.

Penny Mordaunt, the Leader of the UK House of Commons and Lord President of the Privy Council, unexpectedly became the star of the King’s Coronation in May. Her dress garnered significant attention as she carried the Sword of State with grace and poise in Westminster Abbey.

The dress featured a regal teal color with a matching cape and padded headband embellished with gold embroidery.

Due to her historic role as the first woman assuming the position of Lord President, Penny collaborated with specialists to design the custom teal dress. The gold ferns embroidered on the dress’s cape and hat paid tribute to the traditional Privy Council uniform while symbolizing her coastal constituency, Portsmouth North.

Now, visitors can witness Penny’s iconic teal dress in person until September 2 by touring the Speaker’s House, as announced on the UK Parliament’s Instagram page.

The exhibition also features other ceremonial dress and uniforms worn by MPs and staff members during the King’s Coronation.

During the ceremony, Penny carried the Sword of State, weighing 3.6 kg (8 lb), for 51 minutes straight. She then received the Jewelled Sword of Offering, a lighter sword decorated with silver, diamonds, rubies, and emeralds, which she held upright for the remainder of the two-hour ceremony. The Jewelled Sword was blessed by the Archbishop of Canterbury before being presented to the King.
