Westminster Should Retain the Power to Act in the Nation’s Interests on Defence, Not Brussels

According to your report, HS2 will incur a cost of £105 million per kilometer, which is equivalent to over £1,000 per centimeter. It’s hard to find any other scheme that has cost more in terms of ground coverage.

Decelerating on the Roads

Peter Hargreaves wonders if it’s the senior drivers or a new generation of timid drivers who are driving too slowly on British roads.

Personally, I make an effort to always drive within the prescribed speed limits. Speed limits should not be viewed as minimum or target speeds, and yet many law-abiding citizens are happy to disregard them. While modern cars have advanced safety features, such as better brakes and handling, the laws of physics still apply. Is the desire to arrive a few minutes early worth risking someone’s life?

An Ailing GP System

While the struggles of junior doctors receive significant media coverage, the state of general practice is often overlooked. In our practice in Essex, all three doctors have resigned, and three out of four local practices have closed their doors to new patients. The recruitment of new GPs is nearly impossible, and even finding locum doctors is a challenge. Ill-health and stress have led several GPs to resign, leaving the GP system on the verge of collapse. In an area with a predominantly elderly population, this collapse would be catastrophic, especially considering plans for increased housing. Last year, the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) identified over 500 practices at risk of closure. With many current doctors nearing retirement age and the lack of new replacements, we must examine why the younger generation is not interested in becoming GPs and seek solutions to address their concerns.

Your article reports that due to the withdrawal of a government subsidy, 3,000 pharmacies in England may be forced to close. These are the same pharmacies that the government promotes as the preferred option for minor ailments, aiming to alleviate the burden on GPs.
