Wesleyan University to Discontinue Legacy Admissions following SCOTUS Affirmative Action Ruling

Wesleyan University has made the decision to formally eliminate its legacy admissions policy following the Supreme Court’s ruling against affirmative action. This move comes after criticism from Democrats, who argue that if programs aimed at aiding minorities in accessing higher education are being dismantled, then universities should also be prohibited from giving preferential treatment to children of alumni and donors.

President Michael S. Roth announced the university’s decision in a blog post, emphasizing that legacy status has had minimal influence on admissions for many years and that the policy is now officially being ended. Roth stated, “While we still value the intergenerational connections that come from having multiple generations of Wesleyan attendees, there will no longer be any advantage in the selection process. Family members of alumni will be admitted based solely on their own merits.”

Roth further explained that Wesleyan has never focused on an applicant’s racial identification or family connections, but rather takes a comprehensive view of their lived experience through various factors such as the college essay, high school record, letters of recommendation, and interactions with the community.

It should be noted that while some top universities admit more legacy students than Black and Latino students combined, a study conducted by Duke University found that eliminating legacy and athlete preferences does not have as significant an impact on diversity as racial preferences.

By making this decision, Wesleyan University aims to promote a fair and equitable admissions process that prioritizes merit and individual qualifications.
