‘We’re Living the Dream’: Meet the British Couple Who Relocated to a Remote Outback Town of 50 Residents, Establishing Australia’s Sole Mad Max Museum

Adrian Bennett, a passionate Mad Max fan, took a leap of faith by uprooting his family from Bradford, England, and settling in the remote town of Silverton in the NSW outback. Despite the town’s tiny population of only 50 people, Adrian realized his long-cherished dream of building a museum dedicated to the second Mad Max movie, “The Road Warrior,” which was filmed in the area.

The Bennett family moved to Silverton in 2006, with the intention of eventually opening the museum. Finally, after four years, the Mad Max 2 Museum became a reality. Silverton, though small, boasts a unique stretch of road that features several galleries, including The John Dynon Gallery and Adrian and Linda’s cherished museum.

Immediately recognizable as a Mecca for fans of George Miller’s post-apocalyptic masterpiece, the eccentric little building holds a treasure trove of memorabilia. Visitors can feast their eyes on a vast collection of movie photographs, character costumes, and an impressive array of original and replica vehicles from the film, including two interceptors.

Speaking to Daily Mail Australia, Adrian’s obsession with the Mad Max franchise becomes evident. It is clear that building and running the museum was a dream come true for him. “Some people think I’m joking when I talk about how much I love the movie,” he admits.

Adrian’s passion for Mad Max was sparked when he first watched the action-packed film at age 18 in a UK cinema. His wife, Linda, is hardly surprised by his decision to relocate to Australia and dedicate their lives to the museum. “The first thing he said to me when we met was, ‘Have you seen a movie called Mad Max?'” Linda shares. “So, when we had been together forever, I wasn’t surprised [he wanted to move to Australia]. And I always thought it would be nice to come out here; he was always planning it in his head.”

Despite their unwavering enthusiasm, many people questioned the couple’s sanity when they decided to start a business in a town with a population of only 50. “You’re a bit of a financial genius, aren’t you, starting a museum in a town with a population of 50 people?” Linda recalls one comment. She promptly replied, “Financial genius? Yes, this town gets hundreds of thousands of tourists.”

Adrian emphasizes that apart from the town’s tourist appeal, Australia needed a dedicated Mad Max museum. “They needed this museum, it didn’t make sense not to have something like this,” he affirms. “When we moved in, 50 people were living here, but I said yes, the financial genius gets 160,000 tourists coming through [the town every year]. If I got a dollar off every 160,000 people coming through, I’d be doing alright, wouldn’t I?”

While there is an admission fee of $7 to enter the museum, there is also a plethora of merchandise available for purchase. Nevertheless, the couple insists that their motivation has never been solely about making money. Their primary goal has always been to live comfortably while fulfilling their dream of owning a Mad Max museum in the outback. “We have never been driven by cash, we just want to live comfortably,” Adrian explains. Linda adds, “It was built from a passion, and if this door shuts tomorrow because no one was coming in, we still wouldn’t sell up.”

For film enthusiasts, the Mad Max 2 Museum in Silverton is an absolute must-visit. With its extensive collection of movie photographs, character costumes, and an impressive display of original and replica vehicles, including two interceptors, this museum promises an unrivaled experience.
