Went to a Cafe with Novel Toilet Seats, Would Not Revisit

Poop Café, located in Toronto’s Koreatown, is a unique and humor-filled spot that specializes in Korean desserts with a funny twist. It’s a paradise for those who appreciate bathroom humor, as feces is depicted throughout the eatery. While I did enjoy the food and tea during my visit, I don’t feel the need to go back.

Poop Café is not the first of its kind, as similar concepts can be found in Asia, such as Modern Toilet in Taiwan and Ddo-ong Café in South Korea. Even the US had a taste of this fun trend with Magic Restroom, a café in the Los Angeles area that unfortunately closed after eight months.

Having been open since 2016, Poop Café has become a staple in this genre. When I arrived on a Tuesday around 1 p.m., I had to search for a seat, as the place was crowded with small children who were there to enjoy the fecally themed desserts. At first glance, the café could have used some maintenance, with one of the poop sculptures missing a large chunk.

Most of the café’s surfaces were painted black, which could either create a speakeasy atmosphere or seem dingy. Unfortunately, due to missing flushers on toilets and chips on sculptures, it leaned toward the latter. The café representatives acknowledged the damages and assured they were working diligently to rectify the situation.

Despite this, the red toilet seats stood out against the black walls, creating a unique aesthetic. The café had a loose underwater theme, with walls adorned with colorful mermaids, walruses, crabs, and octopi designed to resemble smiling pieces of feces. Boba, a popular ingredient, was highlighted in the murals as well.

Among the menu options were cute poke bowls shaped like Shiba Inus, over-the-top milkshakes in both Western and Asian flavors, bánh mì sandwiches, fruit teas, and a purple confection called mermaid soda, complete with a white-chocolate tail rising from a mound of whipped cream. The menu seemed like a dream come true for kids and whimsical adults.

I decided to order a cup of Orange Pekoe tea for $2.85, which came with a poop-shaped strainer. It was cleverly designed, with the strainer hanging off of small butt cheeks resting on the lip of a toilet-shaped cup. The tea tasted great.

Another option I tried was the bingpoo, Poop Café’s version of a Korean shaved ice dessert called bingsu. In pictures, it was decorated with a smiling chocolate poop emoji. I ordered the version topped with Nutella ice cream for $12, hoping to enhance the poop-like appearance. However, the poop emoji was missing, and instead, I received a delicious bingsu with brownie bites, strawberry slices, cornflakes, and a scoop of Nutella ice cream.

I also indulged in the bubble waffle with brown sugar boba for $9.75. While the boba vaguely resembled poop, it was a stretch to tie it to the theme. Nonetheless, it was a tasty and warm Asian-inspired dessert. Like the bingpoo, this menu item lacked its signature chocolate poop emoji.

While I don’t have plans to revisit Poop Café, I do recommend a one-time visit for a flush of humor that is usually associated with the bathroom but rarely served in a dining room. And of course, no visit would be complete without checking out the themed bathroom, though I chose to keep my bathroom experience a secret. The sticky surroundings during my visit did not entice me to return, despite enjoying the food.
