Weekend Box Office: Disney’s ‘Haunted Mansion’ Performs Below Expectations

Promotional campaigns for the movies “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” were almost wrapped up by the time the actors went on strike on July 13. However, the buzz and excitement surrounding “Haunted Mansion” were supposed to kick off on July 15. This included interviews and a red carpet premiere featuring a star-studded cast, including Tiffany Haddish, Jamie Lee Curtis, Owen Wilson, LaKeith Stanfield, Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson, and Jared Leto. Such events have the potential to generate millions of social media mentions.

Unfortunately, the strike led to the cancellation of twelve appearances by the “Haunted Mansion” cast on popular TV shows like “Good Morning America.” Planned promotional events in London, Toronto, Atlanta, Miami, and San Diego were also called off. As a result, director Justin Simien (“Dear White People”) had to promote the movie alone. However, rather than focusing on the movie itself, numerous headlines centered around the strike, as observed in this article on MovieWeb.

Tony Chambers, Disney’s executive vice president of theatrical distribution, acknowledged the impact of not having the cast available for promotion. He emphasized the immense attention garnered by “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” describing them as major powerhouses. In an interview, Chambers stated that despite the setback, “Haunted Mansion” still had a chance to succeed. He noted that there were few family films scheduled for release during the remaining summer school holiday, providing a clear opportunity for the movie. Additionally, Mr. Chambers highlighted that ticket buyers had reacted positively to the film with an 85 percent positive score on Rotten Tomatoes.

In terms of international release, “Haunted Mansion” earned an additional $9 million in partial release overseas. It is worth mentioning that Disney holds a dominant position in Hollywood as the largest movie company, encompassing well-known entities such as Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, Walt Disney Animation, Searchlight, 20th Century Pictures, and a division dedicated to bringing classic Disney content to the big screen in innovative ways. “Haunted Mansion” is a product of this extensive Disney repertoire and is based on the beloved Disneyland ride, which has been captivating audiences for 54 years.
