July 11 (UPI) — The global surfing community is in mourning following the tragic death of Mikala Jones, a talented professional surfer who lost his life while riding waves in Indonesia. Jones, who was 44 years old, suffered a fatal injury during a surfing accident in the Mentawais, the beautiful island chain on Indonesia’s west side. Jones’ daughter, Isabella Jones, took to Instagram on Monday to share the devastating news.
In her heartfelt Instagram post, Isabella revealed that her father passed away on Sunday. She expressed her shock and sadness, acknowledging that although losing him was incredibly painful, she found solace in knowing that he was doing what he loved most. Jones was well-known in the surfing community for his surfing video production and had amassed a large following of more than 53,000 people on Instagram.
Many professional surfers, including legendary Kelly Slater and No. 2 ranked surfer Griffin Colapinto, as well as former champion Mick Fanning, paid tribute to Jones on social media. Reef, the apparel company that sponsored Jones, also released a statement expressing their condolences and celebrating his contributions to the sport.
