Water companies face sewage lawsuit, public may receive hundreds of millions in compensation

The first-ever class action against water companies could result in the public receiving significant compensation due to alleged failures to disclose the true extent of raw sewage discharges and the abuse of their monopolistic positions. Six water companies are facing collective legal action for alleged inadequate reporting of sewage spills and pollution to UK regulators. The claims argue that underreporting of pollution has allowed the water companies to overcharge customers and has breached competition law. Prof Carolyn Roberts is bringing the claims on behalf of over 20 million household customers, with compensation potentially totaling hundreds of millions of pounds. The claims will be heard at the competition tribunal, and if successful, compensation could be awarded to customers who have paid water bills from April 2020. The claims are significant as they aim to both secure compensation for affected customers and send a message to water companies that they cannot unlawfully pollute rivers and mislead regulators without consequences.
