Warning: Mom Shares Insight on the Perils of Reusable Water Balloons

Kelley Whitty’s daughter, Leah, had a terrifying experience when she accidentally got magnets from a reusable water balloon stuck in her nose. Thankfully, the outcome wasn’t as severe as it could have been, but Whitty wants to raise awareness about the dangers of magnets in these balloons. This incident occurred while Leah was at a friend’s house, and she ended up needing medical attention to have the magnets removed from her nose. The doctors had never seen anything like it before, and it took some effort to safely extract the magnets.

Jenn, the friend whose house Leah had been at, discovered that a magnet had fallen out of a reusable water balloon and ended up in Leah’s towel. When Leah wiped her face, the magnet went into her nose unknowingly. Luckily, the damage was not extensive, and Leah received treatment to heal her perforated septum. Mentally, the experience was traumatizing for Leah, but she is gradually recovering and engaging in her favorite activities again.

Whitty took action and posted a public service announcement on Facebook to warn other parents about the danger of magnets in reusable water balloons. She has also involved a lawyer and reported the incident to the Consumer Product Safety Commission and contacted Amazon, the retailer from which the balloons were purchased. While there is no recall history or reported incidents regarding these balloons, Whitty strongly believes they should be removed from shelves to prevent other children from experiencing what Leah went through.
