‘WandaVision’ VFX Coordinator Reveals Working Exhausting ’18-Hour Days’

  • A former visual effects coordinator for the series “WandaVision” revealed that he endured “18-hour days” while working on the show.
  • The entire team worked these grueling hours without any days off until they completed episode 10.
  • Recently, VFX workers at Marvel Studios made the decision to unionize, seeking improved pay and working conditions.

A visual effects (VFX) coordinator involved in the production of Marvel Studios’ “WandaVision” disclosed the demanding nature of their work, working “18-hour days” as part of the project.

Recently, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts (IATSE) revealed that VFX workers at Marvel Studios have filed for a union election with the National Labor Relations Board, seeking representation by IATSE.

In an interview with IGN, several VFX artists explained their reasons for supporting unionization. They emphasized that the increased content output during phase four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe had intensified their workload.

Phase four saw the release of seven movies, eight TV series, and two television specials from Marvel, all within a two-year period.

Mark Patch, a former VFX coordinator for “WandaVision,” expressed concern over the sustainability of their demanding schedule and workload. He questioned how such intensity could be maintained without sufficient time off.

Patch stated, “When you’re turning a 90-minute movie into a 10-hour feature basically, you’re doing 10 times the amount of work within the same, or even sometimes a shorter period of time.” He also noted the added pressure on their time and overall well-being due to the increased demand for content from Marvel following COVID-19 and the rise of streaming platforms.

Gabrielle Levesque, another VFX worker at Marvel, echoed these sentiments, describing the current work environment as more like a conveyor belt rather than a space for each project to receive the necessary time and attention.

Insider reached out to Marvel Studios for comment on the allegations made by the workers but has not received an immediate response.

Earlier this year, artists in the visual effects community expressed their views to Vulture, criticizing Marvel Studios as the industry’s biggest “bully.” They spoke of a culture that prioritizes those who are favored by those in power, and revealed the existence of a blacklist containing artists who had fallen out of favor.
