Walmart Shooter Settles with Victims’ Families in Groundbreaking $5 Million Agreement following Racist Attack

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — In a tragic incident at a Walmart in 2019, a white Texas gunman who killed 23 people in a racist attack on Hispanic shoppers, the families of the victims reached a settlement for more than $5 million.

Patrick Crusius, the perpetrator, was sentenced to 90 consecutive life sentences in July after pleading guilty to federal hate crime charges, marking one of the most devastating mass killings in U.S. history. The agreed settlement for restitution has been approved by U.S. District Judge David Guaderrama.

While Crusius still faces a separate trial in Texas that could result in the death penalty, this settlement highlights a step towards justice for the victims’ families.

This tragic incident involved Patrick Crusius driving from Dallas to specifically target Hispanic shoppers using an AK-style rifle. Prior to the attack, Crusius posted a racist manifesto online expressing his concerns about a Hispanic “invasion” of Texas.

In February, Crusius pleaded guilty after federal prosecutors removed the death penalty from consideration. However, Texas prosecutors intend to pursue the death penalty during his state trial, which has yet to be scheduled.

As part of the agreement, Crusius will pay $5,557,005.55 in restitution to the victims’ families.
