Free and streaming services will be conducted on Monday for Yom Kippur, which is considered Judaism’s holiest day.
The Laugh Factory Hollywood will host a Kol Nidre service at 11 a.m. and a Neilah service at 6 p.m. It is recommended that attendees arrive at least 45 minutes early to secure a seat.
For those unable to attend in person, the services will be streamed live on the Laugh Factory’s website, laughfactory.com.
Laugh Factory owner Jamie Masada emphasized the significance of these services, particularly for individuals who are away from home, in hospitals, or living in retirement homes, both locally and globally.
This year marks the 41st consecutive year that Laugh Factory Hollywood has offered free High Holy Days services.
In addition to the services at Laugh Factory Hollywood, the JEM Center in Beverly Hills will hold a traditional service at 10 a.m., a Yizkor memorial service at approximately 1 p.m., an afternoon service at 4:45 p.m., and a concluding service at 6 p.m.
To register for the services at the JEM Center, please visit www.jemcommunitycenter.com/events/high-holiday-services-2023-2023-09-24-19-00. For further information, contact 310-772-0000.
It is important to note that most congregations require membership and tickets for High Holy Days services.
Meanwhile, Temple of the Arts will be conducting its services at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills. They are offering free admission to their 2 p.m. service, but reservations are necessary. To make a reservation, call 323-658-9100. Upon arrival, guests will need to present a photo identification and go through a security clearance process.
During the service, Beverly Hills Councilman John Mirisch will address the topic of “Standing Up to Antisemitism.”
In an email interview with City News Service, Mirisch stated that antisemitism has been a pervasive issue for centuries. He believes that education and exposure to Judaism and Jewish people can help combat this problem. Mirisch also encourages Jewish individuals to proudly express their identity and acknowledges that supporting Israel as the Jewish ancestral homeland plays a crucial role in protecting against various forms of antisemitism.
As a show of support for the strikes, Temple of the Arts is offering complimentary seating to members of the Writers Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, as well as their immediate families.
During the 10 a.m. service, Judea Pearl will discuss Daniel Pearl World Music Days, which were established in response to the tragic kidnapping and killing of his son, Daniel Pearl, in 2002. These international concerts use the power of music to promote humanity and understanding and typically take place around the anniversary of Daniel Pearl’s birth on October 10th.
To stream Temple of the Arts’ services, visit their website at www.bhtota.org or watch on Jewish Life Television at www.jltv.tv/channels.
Yom Kippur started at sundown on Sunday, with observant Jews fasting and seeking forgiveness for their sins. According to Jewish tradition, Yom Kippur commemorates the day Moses returned from Mount Sinai with a new set of commandment tablets after smashing the first ones. On this day, God pardoned the people for worshipping a golden calf.
During the 10-day period known as the Days of Teshuvah and the Days of Awe, which ends at sundown on Yom Kippur, observant Jews believe that God writes the names of the righteous in the Book of Life on Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, and seals the book on Yom Kippur. Therefore, the traditional greeting on Yom Kippur is “Gemar Chatima Tova,” meaning “good final sealing,” which conveys the wish for one’s name to be sealed in the Book of Life.
Yom Kippur services begin with the Kol Nidre, an ancient prayer that signifies the release of vows and promises made to God. The day concludes with the sounding of a ram’s horn called a shofar.
Yom Kippur officially ends at sundown on Monday, marking a day of transformation, forgiveness, and hope. In his Yom Kippur statement, President Joe Biden expressed his belief in the power of this day to inspire personal and societal change. He urged everyone to summon the courage to bridge the gap between the current world and the world we aspire to create.
