Vote for ‘The Forgotten 5’ at the Toy Hall of Fame and celebrate your favorite toys!

The “forgotten five” are a group of toys that constantly vie for a spot in the National Toy Hall of Fame but always seem to fall short. This year, however, one of them will finally make it in. The Hall of Fame is giving fans the power to choose which toy will be inducted. Typically, toy-induction decisions are made by a panel of experts in the field. They select the top three toys out of a dozen nominees. However, for their 25th anniversary, the National Toy Hall of Fame is changing things up.

In addition to the usual selection process, where three toys are chosen by the panel, fans will now have the opportunity to vote for one of the “forgotten five” finalists. Christopher Bensch, the chief curator, likened these toys to underdogs, stating that they are “like Susan Lucci was to the Emmy Awards, or Steve Tasker to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.” This year, for the first time, the voting power is in the hands of the public. Fans can vote once a day on the National Toy Hall of Fame website until October 24. The winner, along with the other inductees, will be announced during the induction ceremony on November 9.

It’s worth noting that anyone can nominate a toy for the National Toy Hall of Fame. However, to be considered, the toy must have inspired creative play and enjoyed popularity over a sustained period of time.

The finalists are:

  • The Fisher-Price Corn Popper, a push toy with colorful balls that encourages babies who are learning to walk.
  • My Little Pony mini horses, which outsold Barbie for several years between 1982 and 1993.
  • PEZ, the breath mint turned candy brick with pop culture-inspired dispensers that sells billions of candies each year.
  • The pogo stick, which has kept users bouncing since the early 1900s.
  • Hasbro’s shape-shifting Transformers action figures, which have inspired comics, cartoons, and blockbuster films.

The other three toys to be honored will be chosen from 12 finalists that were announced last month. The list includes baseball cards, Battleship, bingo, Bop It, Cabbage Patch Kids, Choose Your Own Adventure game books, Connect 4, Little Tikes Cozy Coupe, Nerf, slime, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Barbie’s boyfriend, Ken.
