Volkswagen’s EV Program Makes a Comeback, Winning the GCOTY Award

The Volkswagen Group has made significant progress towards its electric-car future with the ID.7 winning the prestigious German Car of the Year award. Despite facing tough competition from the Hyundai Motor Group and China’s budget MG brand, the large Volkswagen BEV claimed the outright award, a notable achievement considering the previous criticisms faced by the ID.3 and ID.4 models when they were launched.

The German Car of the Year award follows a rigorous three-day testing process in Alsfeld, near Frankfurt, to determine the category winners. The finalists then undergo additional testing in southern Germany. This year, the judging panel comprised over 40 German and international automotive journalists, with the Volkswagen ID.7 emerging as the winner in the premium (up to €70,000) category as well as the overall winner.

The Chinese-built MG4 took the top spot in the sub-€35,000 category, while the Kia EV9 was chosen as the winner in the Luxury (over €90,000) segment. The Porsche 911 T was crowned the Performance car champion. Hyundai’s Ioniq 6 claimed victory in the New Energy category.

Accepting the trophy for the ID.7, Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer expressed relief and excitement. He said, “We have just launched our ID.7, and it has already been named German Car Of The Year by a prestigious expert jury – an incredible success! This win shows that we are on the right path: top quality, intuitive operation, and efficiency that’s actually fun. It’s 100 percent Volkswagen.”

Volkswagen’s journey towards electric vehicles has not been without challenges. The ID.3 and ID.4 faced criticism from both automotive journalists and customers for issues such as brittle-feeling plastics, clunky multimedia systems, short range, and a harsh ride. However, the ID.7’s win marks the sixth time that an electric vehicle has claimed the outright GCOTY award, following the Jaguar I-Pace in 2019, the Porsche Taycan in 2020, the Honda E in 2021, and the Ioniq 5 last year.
