Volkswagen reduces electric vehicle production due to ‘significant customer hesitance’

Customers were initially attracted to the idea of a high upfront cost that would eventually be offset by cheaper charging. However, the recent increase in natural gas prices due to Russia’s attack on Ukraine has caused electricity costs to soar. Additionally, petrol prices have slightly decreased in recent months, narrowing the advantage of electric cars.

The UK industry has been actively advocating for more affordable and widely available public charging options, especially for those who don’t have access to discounted overnight electricity from a home charger.

Meanwhile, Volkswagen has decided to postpone the production of the new ID.7 saloon car from July to a later date this year. This decision comes as the demand for electric cars has weakened across the industry. Factors contributing to this decline include reduced subsidies, higher inflation, and longer delivery times caused by parts shortages.

Nevertheless, Volkswagen remains optimistic that the demand for electric cars will rebound as the year progresses. They are introducing appealing new models such as the extensively revised ID.3 and the upcoming ID.7.

Recognizing the need to compete on price in the electric car market, Volkswagen unveiled the ID.2all prototype in March. This model, priced at less than £22,000 (€25,000), offers a range of up to 280 miles. Furthermore, Volkswagen’s CEO, Thomas Schäfer, has committed to releasing an even more affordable model priced below £17,500.
