Vlad the Impaler, the Historical Inspiration for Dracula, Embraced a Vegan Lifestyle, Experts Reveal

Count Dracula, the iconic bloodthirsty vampire, may have been inspired by Vlad the Impaler, a vegan Romanian prince, according to expert analysis. Vlad, also known as Vlad Dracula, ruled Wallachian three times in the 15th century and later became the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s famous novel “Dracula”. Recent scientific analysis of his handwritten letters suggests that Vlad may have consumed only plant-based meals.

Researchers from the University of Catania extracted blood, sweat, and saliva from the letters. Surprisingly, they found an absence of animal food proteins, indicating a plant-based diet. Co-author Gleb Zilberstein stated that the prototype vampire may have been a vegan out of necessity rather than desire. During the 15th century, Europe experienced harsh climates and food scarcity, leading to aristocrats adopting meagre diets with limited meat consumption.

The letters also provided clues suggesting that Vlad suffered from a condition called hemolacria, where tears mixed with blood. Professor Vincenzo Cunsolo, who led the study, believed that Vlad experienced this condition in the later years of his life. The findings were published in the journal Analytical Chemistry.

This revelation adds an intriguing twist to the history and mythology surrounding Count Dracula, showcasing the unexpected duality of a feared ruler who may have followed a compassionate and plant-based lifestyle.
