Vivek Ramaswamy Introduces His ‘America First’ Foreign Policy Platform in Yorba Linda, according to Orange County Register

Vivek Ramaswamy found himself seated at an antique piano, his hands skillfully playing the keys of an instrument that once belonged to former President Richard Nixon.

Shortly after, he stood in front of a captivated audience in the library that bears Nixon’s name. Drawing inspiration from Nixon’s policies and even his iconic peace sign gesture, Ramaswamy unveiled his own foreign policy agenda.

On August 17th, at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library in Yorba Linda, the Republican presidential candidate pledged to “restore Nixon realism” to the United States’ foreign policy if elected.

With less than a week until the first Republican presidential debate, Ramaswamy addressed hundreds of attendees, stating that Nixon, a Yorba Linda native, “deserves to be remembered for his contributions to our foreign policy.”

“Nixon is perhaps the most underappreciated president in American history,” he declared. “My foreign policy will be guided by a modern interpretation of the Monroe Doctrine, combined with elements from the Nixon Doctrine.”

In 1969, Nixon introduced a foreign policy doctrine that emphasized the U.S.’s role in assisting rather than dictating Asian affairs. He believed that Asian nations should take responsibility for their own military defense, except in cases involving major powers with nuclear weapons.

Ramaswamy criticized the United States’ involvement in the war in Ukraine, stating that it does not serve the country’s national interest. He took aim at the bipartisan support for Ukraine, asserting that “the worst ideas are bipartisan, and our engagement in the Ukrainian War proves just that.”

Under his proposed terms for ending the war, Ramaswamy stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin would need to sever his military alliance with China, a move that would greatly benefit the United States. He described the alliance between these autocratic countries as the “greatest military threat” faced by the U.S. today.

“The real threat we face is communist China, which we rely on for our modern way of life, including the shoes on our feet and the phones in our pockets,” Ramaswamy emphasized. “I will freeze current lines of control, commit to never admitting Ukraine to NATO, and in return, demand that Russia withdraw from its military alliance with China, remove nuclear weapons from Kaliningrad, and cease its military presence in the Western Hemisphere.”

Addressing concerns that severing ties between Russia and China would embolden China’s Xi Jinping to take action against Taiwan, Ramaswamy expressed confidence that without Russia’s support, Jinping would think twice before making such a move.

If elected president, Ramaswamy pledged to end the war in Ukraine on terms that would prioritize and advance the United States’ own interests, including redirecting resources from Ukraine to securing the U.S.-Mexico border.

“I refuse to allocate military resources to defend an invasion across another country’s border, when we should be using those resources to defend against invasion across our own southern border,” he declared to thunderous applause.

Throughout his hour-long speech, Ramaswamy, the son of immigrants, also touched on the topic of illegal immigration. He emphasized that an immigrant’s initial entry into the country must be in accordance with the law.

Visitors who eagerly paid around $35 for admission to the event expressed their excitement while waiting in the long line that snaked around the building. Many praised Ramaswamy’s “intelligent background” and strong work ethic, while others were simply thrilled to see another Republican presidential candidate in Orange County.

According to a July survey conducted by the Public Policy Institute of California, Ramaswamy did not fare well compared to other candidates in the state. He tied with former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson and Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, ranking last.

However, during Thursday’s event, the hundreds of people gathered closely together in the spacious ballroom gave him a standing ovation both before and after his speech.

Prior to delving into his foreign policy platform, Ramaswamy expressed concern about the United States being in the midst of a national identity crisis. He lamented that the American Dream may no longer exist for his two sons.

“Faith, patriotism, hard work, and family have seemingly disappeared, replaced by ideologies like ‘wokism,’ ‘climatism,’ and ‘transgenderism,’ as well as rising rates of depression, anxiety, fentanyl use, and suicide,” Ramaswamy remarked.

Coincidentally, just eight miles away from the Nixon Library, where Ramaswamy referred to “transgenderism” as a reflection of a “deeper void of meaning in our country,” the Orange Unified School District was considering a policy that would require certain school officials to notify parents if their child expresses a desire to be identified or treated as a different gender.
