Vivek Ramaswamy, GOP presidential candidate, set to introduce foreign policy proposal in Orange County this week

Vivek Ramaswamy, the GOP presidential hopeful gaining momentum in some polls as a potential challenger to former President Donald Trump, has added Orange County to his campaign itinerary ahead of the primary.

Ramaswamy has scheduled appearances in Irvine and Yorba Linda on Thursday, Aug. 17. The highlight of the day will be his speech at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library in which he plans to present his comprehensive foreign policy vision, addressing key issues concerning Russia, China, Taiwan, India, and other Asian nations. As stated on his campaign website, Ramaswamy aims to shift away from neoconservatism and liberal hegemony towards a homeland that prioritizes the tangible interests of its citizens.

Nationally, Ramaswamy is currently polling in third place with 7.2% support, trailing behind Trump at 52.7% and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis at 14%, according to projections by FiveThirtyEight. However, in California, Ramaswamy ranks at the bottom of the GOP field, as revealed by a survey conducted by the Public Policy Institute. Republican likely voters in the state showed a preference for Trump, DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, former Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, and South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem over Ramaswamy.

A graduate of Harvard and Yale Law, Ramaswamy refers to himself as an “unapologetic nationalist” and has vigorously defended Trump throughout his campaign. He advocates for an “America First” agenda that surpasses Trump’s proposals, focusing on national revival rather than separation from communist China.

Various GOP contenders have already made visits to Orange County or plan to attend the California Republican Party’s fall convention in Anaheim later in September. Southern California, particularly Orange County, attracts Republican candidates due to its potential for fundraising and the state’s significant role in the primary elections. California’s presidential primary is scheduled for March 5, known as Super Tuesday, when numerous states hold their elections. The state offers 169 delegates during the GOP primary.

The event at the Nixon Library, part of the Presidential Policy Perspectives on America’s Role in the World speaker series, will take place at 8 p.m. General admission tickets are priced at $40.

Prior to the evening event, Ramaswamy will host a luncheon with the Republican Party of Orange County in Irvine. Tickets for the luncheon range from $150 to $250, with the higher-priced option including a photo opportunity.
