Violation of First Amendment Rights: White House’s Censorship of Social Media

On March 26, 2021, White House digital director Rob Flaherty contacted Facebook to inquire about the restrictions that would be imposed on the New York Post. He questioned whether articles discussing deaths would receive any reductions or labels based on the company’s policy. However, what we were actually doing was providing occasional news pieces about the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine, sharing the information available to us at that time. We also advocated for taking the vaccine in our editorials.

To summarize the incidents where The Post faced social media censorship: First, we were told we could not publish Hunter Biden’s laptop story, claiming it was fake or hacked, when it was neither. Secondly, our coverage speculating about COVID-19 leaking from a lab was censored, despite substantial evidence supporting this theory. Lastly, our reporting on COVID-19 was restricted, even though we were advocating for vaccination and addressing the questions the public had.

On the day Rob Flaherty contacted us, our front-page headline was “Glazed and Confused,” focusing on President Biden’s apparent mental issues. However, there seems to be a deliberate effort to prevent you from reading about such matters. The White House has been pressuring social media companies to ban or delete articles and opinions, whether it’s about the open border or any other policy they want to keep hidden.

This government pressure on social media companies to curb freedom of speech goes against the principles of the First Amendment. Their intention is not to protect you but to safeguard their own interests.
