Vigil Attendees Express Displeasure as Ron DeSantis Speaks at Jacksonville Shooting Memorial

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) faced boos from the crowd during a vigil for the victims of a racist attack at a Dollar General store in Jacksonville. This incident occurred on Sunday and claimed the lives of three individuals.

Videos captured the moment when Governor DeSantis, who is also running for president, was jeered by the crowd.

Jacksonville City Councilwoman Ju’Coby Pittman intervened and urged the crowd to set aside political differences.

“It’s not about parties today,” she said. “A bullet doesn’t care about political affiliations.”

Critics have accused Governor DeSantis of implementing policies that make it easier to carry firearms in the state and promoting divisive “anti-woke” ideologies.

Rudolph McKissick, senior pastor of the Bethel Church in Jacksonville, expressed that the divide is due to the continuous disenfranchisement of Black people and the governor’s promotion of bigoted and racially motivated actions to appeal to a Republican base, according to the Associated Press.

The gunman responsible for the attack was identified as 21-year-old Ryan Palmeter, who displayed a Nazi symbol on his weapon.

Sheriff T.K. Waters stated during a press conference that Palmeter had a strong hatred towards Black people. Palmeter committed suicide after the attack and left behind a racist manifesto.

“The manifesto is, quite frankly, the diary of a madman,” Waters said. “He was completely irrational, but he knew what he was doing. He was fully aware.”
