Victorious Woman Resolves Legal Dispute with Glendale Galleria Owners After Tragic Brother’s Accident

The sister of a 79-year-old man tragically passed away after his wheelchair accidentally tumbled down a flight of stairs at the Glendale Galleria in 2021. Now, she has reached a settlement in her lawsuit against the owners of the shopping center, optimizing her chances for justice.

Attorneys representing 77-year-old Rita Sangalang, the sister of the late Jose Mariano, filed court papers on Wednesday with Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Steven A. Ellis announcing that they have resolved her wrongful death/negligence complaint against Brookfield Properties Retail Inc. and Brookfield Properties Management Inc. Although the exact terms of the settlement were not disclosed, this resolution has led to the cancellation of the scheduled Sept. 13 nonjury trial.

In response to the lawsuit, a defense attorney representing the shopping center denied any liability and put forth several defenses, including the argument that Mariano assumed the risk of injury.
