Vermont Town Successfully Closes Road to Preserve Local Charm Amid Rising Influencer Invasion

Vermont Locals Take a Stand Against Fall Foliage Tourists

Residents of Cloudland Road in Pomfret, Vermont have had enough of the leaf-peeping pests that invade their town during the peak season of fall foliage. To combat the influx of influencers and social media users looking to capture the perfect selfie with the picturesque backdrop, the locals have temporarily closed the road to non-residents.

Over the years, Pomfret’s stunning autumn display has garnered attention on social media, attracting an overwhelming number of visitors who trespass onto private property and jam the narrow dirt road with their vehicles. Mike Doten, an 80-acre farm owner on Cloudland Road, spoke to the Boston Globe about their frustration, stating, “Something had to be done. It was too much.”

While the town has always welcomed tourists who come to admire the colorful foliage, the recent surge in disrespectful behavior from internet creators and “Tik Tockers” has posed a threat to public safety. They fly drones, park recklessly, and obstruct emergency vehicle access. Doten and his neighbors recall a time when the visitors were fewer and more polite, primarily consisting of photographers and bed and breakfast guests.

Recognizing the severity of the situation, Pomfret’s government made the decision to close Cloudland Road to non-residents for the three weeks of peak foliage viewing, running from September 23 to October 15. While not everyone agrees with the decision, the locals interviewed by the Globe express no concern about the impact on the tourism industry in the state.
