Verizon Introduces a Enhanced Feature Allowing Customers to Easily Block Email-to-Text Spam Messages

Verizon has introduced a convenient solution for its customers to block spam text messages originating from email accounts with just a single text. This announcement was made by the company on Tuesday. By texting “OFF” to 4040, Verizon customers can prevent the delivery of email-to-text messages, a majority of which are identified as spam. This improves upon the previous process that Verizon had in place for deactivating email-to-text messages.

The issue of text message spam has been persistent in the United States in recent years. Last summer, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) issued a warning about the increasing prevalence of robotext scams. The FCC reported a rise in complaints of unwanted texts from 5,700 in 2019 to 14,000 in 2020, and further to 15,300 in 2021.

In response to this problem, the FCC has implemented a ban on the use of autodialers to send texts to mobile phones without consent or in emergency situations. Earlier this year, the agency established its first set of rules to address scam texting, requiring mobile service providers to block certain types of robotexts that are highly likely to be illegal. Verizon’s new filter is comprehensive, so customers who do not wish to disable email-to-text messages entirely can be assured that they won’t miss important communication from their friends and family. If users change their minds, they can opt back in to receive email-to-text messages by texting “ON” to 4040.
