Vanessa Bryant, the widow of NBA legend Kobe Bryant, has collaborated with Nike to create a unique pair of sneakers set to be released on August 23, which would have been Bryant’s 45th birthday. Both Nike and Vanessa have given a sneak peek of these all-white sneakers, called the Protro 8, through an Instagram post. Vanessa captioned the post, “Kobe 8 ‘Halo’ 8.23.23 🤍 This will be one of many Kobe 8 ‘Halo’ styles coming soon,” along with a video showcasing the silhouette of the shoe. According to Nike, the release of these sneakers “marks the continuation of a storied legacy… embodying the timeliness of an icon never forgotten.”
The Protro 8 sneakers, which feature a herringbone traction pattern, Nike’s swoosh embroidery, and the Mamba logo on the tongue, will be available on Bryant’s birthday through the SNKRS app. In a press release, Nike stated that the Halo line will be an annual release dedicated to honoring and celebrating this special date. This collaboration between Vanessa Bryant and Nike reintroduces their partnership, which began in 2005 with the launch of the Zoom Kobe 1 and included 13 pairs of sneakers modeled by Bryant both on and off the court until his retirement in 2016. Vanessa’s Halo model pays homage to the first Kobe 8 shoe released under his brand in 2012. Nike commented that the Kobe line’s silhouette was designed to be the lightest at the time of its release, following Bryant’s desire for a shoe that would feel like an extension of his foot.

However, in March 2022, Vanessa announced a new agreement with Nike that would allow them to produce shoes in honor of Bryant and their daughter, Gigi Bryant, who also lost her life in the helicopter crash.
