ValleyCats Secure Another Win Against Joliet, Wishing for Campos’ Well-being

Tri-City ValleyCats manager Pete Incaviglia is no stranger to unexpected events in his profession. One such event occurred when Oscar Campos, who recently rejoined the ValleyCats, suffered a hamstring injury while running out an infield single. Despite this setback, the ValleyCats managed to secure a 9-3 victory over the Joliet Slammers.

Tri-City, currently second in the Frontier League’s Eastern Division with a record of 38-24, has been able to maintain their winning streak despite a constantly changing roster. Rookie right fielder Tanner Smith, in just his second professional game since his time at the University of Oregon, contributed with two hits and an RBI. Veteran first baseman Juan Kelly, acquired through a trade, also had a strong showing with a pair of hits and a run scored.

Left fielder Lamar Briggs, who recently signed with the team, continued to impress with three hits, including a two-run homer. He also made a crucial diving catch in the fifth inning. Briggs emphasized the importance of each player taking care of their responsibilities to give the team a chance to win.

ValleyCats starting pitcher Elijah Gill, who has been consistent throughout the season, had a solid performance, allowing only two earned runs over 6 2/3 innings. Gill rebounded from a previous start where he struggled due to illness, showcasing his determination and competitive spirit.

Blake Workman took over for Gill in the seventh inning and secured his first save by pitching the final 2 1/3 innings. The ValleyCats, however, faced some challenges with injuries, as outfielder Aaron Altherr and utility player Robbie Merced were already on the injured list. The team remains hopeful that Campos’ injury is not severe and that he will return soon.

Campos, typically a catcher, started at second base in this game. If his injury keeps him out for an extended period, Jakob Goldfarb may continue to fill the catching role.

Despite the obstacles, Incaviglia expressed confidence in his team’s ability to adapt and overcome. However, he acknowledged that there may come a time when their resources are limited. For now, the focus is on supporting Campos and hoping for a quick recovery.

Overall, the ValleyCats’ resilience and strong performances from both seasoned and rookie players have contributed to their success. They will look to complete a sweep of the Joliet Slammers in their upcoming game.
