Vacation Home Usurped by Squatters; Owner Attacked and Beaten with Bottle

According to reports from European news sources, a British man identified only as Michael was the victim of a brutal attack by squatters who allegedly took over his vacation home in Spain. Michael, who owns a home in Liverpool and a vacation home in the Costa del Sol region of Spain, was alerted by neighbors that squatters had taken over his property. When he arrived to confront the squatters, he was met with hostility and allegedly beaten with a bottle, leaving him with multiple cuts and bruises.

Local authorities responded to the incident and advised Michael to file a complaint about the squatters. In his testimony, Michael stated that he was unable to open the front door with his key and noticed that the locks had been changed. Upon entering the home, he found three men inside and was immediately attacked by one of them with a broken bottle.

The men were later arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking, electricity fraud, and stolen furniture. Michael returned to Liverpool after the attack and the case is still ongoing.

Squatting has been a growing issue in Spain, where current laws reportedly favor squatters over legal homeowners. The same issue has also plagued homeowners in the U.S., with many recounting lengthy legal battles to evict people living in their residences illegally. The pandemic’s eviction moratoriums have only compounded the problem.
