Uvalde Victim’s Pin Disregarded by Lauren Boebert

In a video shared on Twitter, Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) rejected a pin symbolizing the green Converse sneakers worn by a victim of a mass shooting in Uvalde. The action sparked outrage among advocates against gun violence. Brett Cross, who lost his son Uziyah Garcia in the same shooting, expressed his frustration, questioning the choice of elected officials like Boebert. He criticized her lack of empathy and disregard for the sentiments behind the pin. The green Converse sneakers, worn by Maite Rodriguez, became a powerful symbol after actor Matthew McConaughey highlighted them as the only clear evidence used to identify the 9-year-old victim. The pin, along with a pamphlet from the group Lives Robbed, advocating for gun control, was distributed to members of Congress in support of reinstating the assault weapons ban. Despite this, Boebert, who is a co-chair of the Second Amendment Caucus, did not comment on the incident. The pins themselves were created in response to members of Congress wearing AR-15 pins on the House floor to signify their commitment to upholding the Second Amendment. It is concerning that there have been 390 mass shootings this year, with firearms being the leading cause of death among children and teenagers, according to the Gun Violence Archive and The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, respectively.
