Utah YouTuber Ruby Franke Arrested on Suspicion of Child Abuse: NPR

Ruby Franke, a prominent Utah YouTube personality known for her parenting advice videos, was recently arrested on charges of aggravated child abuse. Franke’s arrest came after her malnourished son escaped from their home and sought help from a neighbor. This incident has only confirmed the suspicions of many viewers, as Franke’s videos have long been criticized for potentially showcasing child abuse.

Franke, a 41-year-old mother of six from Ivins, Utah, gained popularity through her YouTube channel “8 Passengers,” where she documented her family’s daily life. However, the channel was removed from YouTube earlier this year, coinciding with increased criticism. Prior to her arrest, numerous expose-style videos and blog posts accused Franke of engaging in toxic behavior and subjecting her children to strict parenting techniques. Some even claimed that she openly abused her children in front of her millions of viewers.

In addition to her YouTube channel, Franke also appeared in a video series called ConneXions Classroom alongside her business partner, Jodi Hildebrandt. ConneXions is a mental health curriculum and counseling service that emphasizes values such as honesty and personal responsibility. The YouTube page for ConneXions was also removed following Franke and Hildebrandt’s arrest.

Franke and Hildebrandt were arrested after Franke’s 12-year-old son escaped through a window and sought help from a neighbor. The child was found with duct tape around his arms and legs and appeared severely malnourished. Another of Franke’s children, her 10-year-old daughter, was also discovered to be malnourished. The Department of Child and Family Services has since taken custody of four of Franke’s children. Franke and Hildebrandt were both arrested on suspicion of aggravated child abuse.

While Franke’s family has not publicly commented on the situation, Franke’s eldest daughter, Shari Franke, has posted about her mother’s arrest on Instagram. She expressed relief that justice was being served and called for assistance in collecting evidence of concerning videos featuring her mother. Franke’s three sisters, who are also family influencers, released a joint statement supporting the arrest and emphasizing the safety of the children as the top priority.
